Independence Heights

Just north of the well-known Heights district in Houston, Texas lies the historic Independence Heights, a neighborhood most Houstonians do not know much about. This neighborhood is unique because it was the first African-American city in the state of Texas. Today, this neighborhood generates a strong sense of community between the recent influx of Latinos and the elderly who still refer to it as, its former name.

Historic Main Street Initiative

North Main Street in Independence Heights was once a bustling area for economic development. In its heyday North Main Street was the hub for all activities in this independent city. Today, the decay of urban blight and disinvestment has taken a toll on the main strip. Community stakeholders are planning an renaissance for the corridor under their economic development initiatives. Bringing back small businesses, local stores and one of a kind homemade products is all a part of the plan to revive this historic street.
